Me Tiago Múrias — Partner — Youth Criminal Law and Criminal Law, Ameur & Múrias, Montréal

Lawyer in youth criminal law and criminal law

Me Tiago Múrias is a criminal defence lawyer practising primarily in youth law, with a practice particularly devoted to representing adolescents charged with criminal offences under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).

Co-founder of Ameur & Múrias in 2013, he represents young people and their families at every stage of the judicial process, from arrest and release through trial and sentencing. He has pleaded before the Court of Québec, the Superior Court and the Québec Court of Appeal, and has extensive jury trial experience.

His involvement in youth law extends beyond his daily practice. Me Múrias is chair of the Bar of Montreal's Liaison Committee with the Court of Québec, Youth Division, a committee bringing together representatives of the judiciary, the defence bar, the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions, youth protection and legal aid in order to help improve how justice functions for children, adolescents and their families.

He is regularly called upon to share his experience with other legal professionals and with workers serving young people. He has acted as a speaker and trainer in youth criminal justice and took part, in 2025, in the Montreal proceedings surrounding the World Congress on Justice for Children.

In February 2026, Me Múrias was also invited to appear before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights of the House of Commons of Canada as part of its study of Bill C-14, which proposed amendments to the YCJA.

Alongside his youth law practice, Me Múrias has developed significant experience in general criminal law and in complex files, notably in national security matters. His work in a major terrorism trial earned him, together with his colleagues, an AQAAD Excellence Award in 2018. He was also recognized by Droit-inc among the lawyers who stood out in Québec in 2017.

A law graduate of the Université du Québec à Montréal, Me Múrias also studied criminology at the Université de Montréal.

He represents his clients in French, English, Portuguese and Spanish, and accepts legal aid mandates.

His practice rests on a thorough knowledge of the distinct regime applicable to adolescents and on a simple conviction: a young person facing the criminal justice system must be able to count on a rigorous, individualized defence that is fully aware of the consequences judicial proceedings can have on their future.
